Senegal Champion of Africa
Dakar erupted when Liverpool star Mane scored the decisive penalty to give Senegal the win. Hundreds of Senegalese supporters flocked to Independence Square, near the presidential palace in the heart of Dakar, to celebrate the victory. The square vibrated to the sound of car horns, vuvuzelas, whistles and firecrackers. A festive atmosphere spread across the capital, with national flags hung on buildings, on vehicles and sidewalks. 5 Tens of thousands of jubilant fans packed the streets of Senegal’s capital Dakar on Monday to welcome the national squad home after its Africa Cup of Nations win. Others danced on the tarmac. As Senegal’s national soccer team touched down in the capital Dakar after winning their first Africa Cup of Nations, each of the thousands of faces there to welcome them home was ecstatic. Sounds of fireworks, horns and cheers rang through the night in Dakar and into Monday 10 morning, when hundreds of people wearing soccer jerseys or draped in Senegalese flags gathered outside the airport to await their team’s return. Senegalese dance music echoed from loudspeakers over the crowd of adoring fans as the team stepped out of the plane to a hero’s welcome. Roads surrounding the airport flowed with a river of supporters as far as the eye could see. Fans arrived by bicycles, motorbikes, cars and 15 on foot, bringing the otherwise busy highways to a joyous standstill. Among them were government officials as well as opposition politicians, celebrating the country’s victory together as one.
