DRUG ADDICTION Drug addiction is one of the most significant public health issues in the world today. It is caused by the use of a substance that results in psychological and physiological need for the substance. Chronic use of a substance like alcohol leads to neurobiological changes that affect thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Typically, this begins with obsessive thoughts about using or consuming the drug, called “craving”, where an individual feels an intense desire for the drug and feels unable to cope without using it. The craving phase is made stronger by drug expectancies. Drug users believe that the substances they take can improve both their life experiences and their personality imperfections. In fact, drugs have rewarding properties such as giving the individual the sensation of living in a dream world or feeling high. That’s why their casual use can become uncontrollable because of these effects. The more drug the person takes, the more the body needs to achieve the same effect or level of intoxication. Eventually, continued use results in the development of tolerance, where a larger dose is required in order to obtain satisfaction. Recovery in rehabilitation clinics is possible regardless of age, background, race, financial status, and education. However, for most drug addicts, it is quite difficult to stop.
